Les années trente, dit-on, sont de retour. La droite intégriste et factieuse occupe la rue, l’ordre moral sort des catacombes, la crise économique pousse à la recherche d’un bouc émissaire et l’islamophobie prend le relais de l’antisémitisme. Cette analogie historique prétend nous éclairer : elle nous aveugle. Voulant lire ce qui arrive à la lumière de ce qui est arrivé, elle en occulte la nouveauté inquiétante. Montrer que nous vivons un tournant historique, paradoxalement masqué par la référence incessante à l’Histoire ; appréhender ce moment crucial dans ce qu’il a d’irréductible au répertoire de nos vicissitudes : tel est le pari de ce livre. Et l’enjeu est existentiel autant qu’intellectuel. Si, comme l’écrit François Mauriac, « l’épreuve ne tourne jamais vers nous le visage que nous attendions », il nous incombe d’être à l’heure au rendezvous et de regarder en face le visage que nous n’attendions pas.Dans une époque qui tend à se prendre pour une autre, l’exactitude devient la tâche prioritaire de la pensée.
